38

University of Kent T24 Drama Society, Canterbury UK

Sound and Lighting Technician

38 follows a phone call between Polly, a university drop-out and recovering addict, and Paul, an Irish priest with insomnia, after Polly dials a number scratched on a club bathroom stall. Their conversation explores themes of religious guilt, drug abuse, suicide, and personal growth. In the end, it is revealed that Polly had misread the number—the original 37 vandalized into a 38—and a flashback shows who the number actually belonged to.

Much of Clara’s sound design explored the relationship between memory and how the past shapes the future. They were inspired by the layered realism within the text, contrasted by the surreal nature of the circumstances and timeline.
